Derrick Williams Sees Himself As NBA Small Forward

Mar 26, 2011 9:03 PM

If Derrick Williams had to compare himself to any current NBA players, his best picks would be hybrid forwards Michael Beasley, David West and Antawn Jamison.

Will Williams play more small forward or power forward in the NBA? That's a point of contention.

"I like when people say 3-4 more than a 4-3," Williams said. "A 4-3, most people think you're 6-foot-10, 250 pounds. Being 6-8, 6-9 and 240, it gives me a real advantage, especially if I play the 3. I don't like being labeled a power forward at all."

Derrick Williams, Second-Half Run Too Much For Duke

Mar 25, 2011 10:31 AM

Derrick Williams scored 25 of his career-high 32 points in the first half of Arizona's 93-77 victory Thursday night, helping the Wildcats reach the final eight for the first time since 2005.

It was a balanced effort in the second half as the Wildcats were able to spread out Duke’s defense and drive to the basket almost at will. On the few occasions when the Blue Devils cut off the drive, Arizona players passed back out to wide-open shooters for 3-point shots.

And when those shots missed, the Duke players were so far out of position from chasing the quicker Arizona players that the Wildcats had easy runs to the rim. They rebounded. They dunked.

“They got those loose balls,” Duke guard Nolan Smith said. “We were in position to get the rebounds, and we didn’t come up with them. They were definitely swarming, getting the rebounds and making plays.”

The Wildcats finished with a 35-26 advantage on the glass.

Duke Aims To Keep Derrick Williams Off Free Throw Line

Mar 23, 2011 10:42 AM

Arizona forward Derrick Williams, a surefire lottery pick in this year’s draft, attempted more free throws than any player in Division I basketball, a fact not lost on the Duke Blue Devils.

"He's one of the most talented players in the country," the 6-10 Kelly said. "He's a guy that not many people have been able to stop. We've been game planning to find ways to defend him well and keep him off the free-throw line."

Williams' penchant for drawing fouls is a key factor in his success, Krzyzewski said, and is an important area of Arizona's overall offense.

"Derrick has got to be a first-team All-American," Krzyzewski said. "He's shot more than 300 free throws. When he is going to the line, he gets his team to the line. He gets his team into the bonus and double-bonus.

"So whatever points he scores, he gets more points that he doesn't get credit for that he gets his teammates."

Kyle Singler's Shooting Woes Continue To Hamper Duke

Mar 20, 2011 10:23 PM

Kyle Singler’s cold shooting remains a cause of concern for Duke.

Singler shot 5-of-12 against Michigan on Sunday as the Blue Devils narrowly escaped with a 73-71 win to advance to the Elite Eight.

Since February, Singler, a 6-8 forward, hasn’t been hitting his shots regularly.

Sunday was just Singler’s fourth game with an offensive rating above 100 (the D-I average) in the last month and his sixth since Feb. 2.

Singler hasn’t made more than one 3-pointer in a game since Feb. 13 and didn’t make any in six of those 12 games since. Unless he’s a threat from outside, defenders can slack off and collapse the middle, making it tougher for Duke to have dribble-penetration.

Derrick Williams On Pace To Eclipse Steve Kerr’s Three-Point Percentage

Mar 19, 2011 2:36 PM

Pac-10 player of the year Derrick Williams is on pace to crush Steve Kerr’s three-point percentage mark of 57 percent.

Williams hit his only attempt Friday against Memphis, improving his season 3-point shooting percentage to 61 percent. If that holds up through the Wildcats' tournament run, the 6-foot-8 forward will eclipse Steve Kerr's school record of 57 percent set in 1987-88. That's also the NCAA mark for players who have made at least 100 3-pointers in a season.

Williams is 36 for 59 this season — not enough to qualify even for the NCAA's lower benchmark of 50 3-pointers made in a season.

"It would be the greatest upset in NCAA history if Derrick breaks Steve Kerr's record, and I say that only because Derrick is such a gamer," coach Sean Miller said. "If we got in the gym and those two guys shot it out, I'd put all money on Steve Kerr. But in the game — and Derrick hit a big one here tonight — the bigger the moment, he's such a gamer."

Kerr also holds the NBA's career mark at 45.4 percent.

Derrick Williams No. 5 Seed Arizona Reject Memphis' Upset Bid

Mar 18, 2011 7:16 PM

Derrick Williams, who is projected as a first round pick if he declares for the draft, scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked a potential tying shot with less than 2 second left to seal Arizona's 77-75 win over Memphis.

With Arizona leading by two with five seconds left, Memphis guard Joe Jackson missed a free throw. Forward Wesley Witherspoon grabbed the offensive rebound and seemed to have an opening at the rim. However, Williams came out of nowhere to send Witherspoon’s attempt the other way.

Williams was 9-for-9 from the free-throw line and hit the go-ahead 3-point with 3:51 remaining to put Arizona up 68-65.

Arizona head coach Sean Miller will not be interested in replacing Sidney Lowe at North Carolina State, according to a source.

Miller served as an assistant coach at N.C. State under Herb Sendek from 1996-2001 before leaving to become associate head coach under Thad Matta at Xavier.

Miller and his staff also landed a top-five recruiting class featuring elite guards Nick Johnson and Josiah Turner, and big men Angelo Chol and Sidiki Johnson.
